About the event
This event was a virtual Zoom webinar focused on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and mental health, featuring Dr. Maria Johnson, a board-certified psychiatrist with expertise in autism spectrum disorders. Afterwards, on Thursday, June 18th, a peer group consisting of an anonymous guest speaker who has late-diagnosed ASD was invited to share their raw and unfiltered experience, along with personally developed advice for individuals and families struggling with late-diagnosed ASD.
Live Q&A sessions were available for both Dr. Johnson and the anonymous ASD-diagnosed guest speaker.
The presenters, Dr. Johnson, Emily, and Gracie, discussed various phenotypes of autism on the spectrum with the DSM-5 criteria for ASD, using the mnemonic "RCGRINS".
We also explored social navigation challenges and restricted repetitive behaviors, and analyzed how depression and anxiety are more prevalent in autism populations due to factors like social rejection, sensory overload, and environmental stressors.
