Can physical activity enhance productivity levels?

Updated: Mar 22

“Exercise, it’s important.” Almost everyone has heard this phrase. You might’ve heard it from your teachers, your coaches, your peers, or your parents. But, do we ever think about to what extent exercise can help us?

Here are 5 ways that exercise can make you more productive:

Increases Energy

A common misconception is that exercising exhausts the body. While extensive exercise may lead to fatigue, regularly exercising increases oxygen and nutrient levels throughout the body, allowing the cardiovascular system to work more efficiently. Exercise-induced hormone increases also boost energy levels throughout the day, which is essential for productivity during a long work day.

Improves Concentration

Many influencers and trainers online emphasize the physical benefits of exercise. However, exercise also benefits the brain. Consistent exercise maintains high oxygen, blood, and sugar levels in the body, making it easier for the brain to stay concentrated and focus on tasks.

More Disciplined

When you make it a priority to exercise each day, the consistency will make you feel more in control and self-disciplined. Through exercising daily, you begin to practice time management, and keeping yourself accountable. This newfound sense of discipline will positively reflect on your work and influence you to complete your work with more efficiency, without procrastinating which is something almost everyone struggles with.

Lowers Stress Levels

Being in high school, we often are piled with homework assignments, sports, and extracurricular activities throughout the week, resulting in incredibly high-stress levels. Even though many people may thrive off of modest amounts of stress levels, high-stress levels can negatively affect you, resulting in feelings of discontent, low self-esteem, and anxiety. Exercise is a great mechanism to relieve stress. Working out and increased physical activity allows for the enhanced production of endorphins. Endorphins are natural stress relievers and can facilitate the body's relaxation. Exercise is proven to be one of the most effective ways to manage stress throughout a long, busy week. When faced with less stressful situations, it will be easier for you to complete your assignments or work in better quality and in less time.

Boosts Mood

Having a positive mindset is incredibly important when faced with a long list of tasks to complete. Physical activity is proven to lower anxiety and depression and often increase self-esteem. In my own experience, I find it easier to complete my homework when I’m motivated. Exercising daily reduces the risk of getting burnt out and helps promote an optimistic mindset, which is essential for staying on task and completing your work efficiently.
